Upon arriving to Turkmenistan, you get the chance to visit the grand city square, its various parks and tour the city’s monuments and shimmering domed Ertogrul Ghazi mosque. The tour then takes you to the spectacular archaeological ruins of Nisa (UNESCO heritage site) before visiting Turkmenbashy mosque and mausoleum – the first of many you will see on this trip.
Next on the itinerary is a visit to the incredible Darvaza Gas crater – known as the ‘Door to Hell’. You arrive at Darvaza early in the evening when the ligh is fading and all you can see for miles is the phenomenal glow of the crater. There is then the chance to veer off road and drive across the desert’s rolling sand dunes.
After departing Darvaza you drive North to Konye Urgench historical site. This UNESCO heritage site is a fascinating ancient town and contains the remains of the capital of Khwarezm, part of the Achaemenid empire.
In the afternoon, you head onwards to the city of Dashoguz – once a stop off for traders on the Silk Road. After checking into the hotel there is the chance to explore the city on a leisurely tour.
The next day, you head to Konye Urgench border crossing and pass through into exotic Uzbekistan. You will be met by your Uzbek guide before driving to Khiva where you will check into our hotel. The next day begins with some sightseeing of the beautiful city of Khiva, visiting the Ichan Kala fortress with its minarets, madrassah, mosque and mausoleums. Here you get a real taste of this unique Asian culture. After lunch, head east across Uzbekistan to Bukhara – another ancient city with stunning blue-domed mosques scattered across the skyline.
In the morning, there is the chance for a half day sightseeing tour of Bukhara, visiting the city’s numerous sights, Samanids mausoleum, Ark fortress, Polkalon complex, trading domes and the Lyabi Hauz complex to name a few. After lunch you drive onwards to Samarkand where you will check into the hotel and spend the evening at leisure. The following day you can enjoy a historic tour of the city of Samarkand, taking in Registan square, Gur Emir mausoleum, Slab bazaar, Ulugbek observatory. There is also the chance to visit the Afrasiab museum and see the beautiful ancient wall paintings and the Meros handicraft centre.
After arriving by train into Termez at 9:30 and dropping off luggage off at your hotel, you begin a full day tour of the city. There is the chance to visit the archaeological museum, the 11th century moseleum – Sultan Saadat complex and Fayaztepa Buddhist monastery.
It’s an early start the following day as you depart for the Sariosiyo border crossing. En route to Dushanbe you get the chance to visit Hisor town to visit the Hisor fortress, one of the most important historical sites in Tajikistan. You will also visit the nearby 16th Century Kunha Medrassah, Museum of Tajik Life and the mausoleum of the Sufi Saint, Mahdumi Azam.
On arrival into Dushanbe your tour takes you visit the Museum of National Antiquities before checking into the five-star Sheraton hotel. After breakfast you drive to Khujand, passing through the 5km Anzob ‘tunnel of death’ en route – this tunnel is a terrifying but exhilarating experience that is part of the whole experience!
On arrival to Khujand you will visit the Shikh Muslihiddin mosque and the Oriental bazaar – the biggest in Central Asia. You will also visit the stunning Arbob palace and the Lenin monument.
After breakfast you take a further tour of Khujand and get the chance to see the ancient city fortress. You’ll have lunch afterwards before driving to the border and then onwards to the Kyrgyz city of Osh. The next day you have an early start today as you begin the longest drive of the journey – a 12 hour journey North up to the capital of Bishkek. This road rivals the Pamir Highway for the most beautiful and scenic journey in Central Asia. You pass huge mountains, canyons and valleys throughout the whole journey as well as crossing a host of different climatic zones and vegetation levels as you pass the natural and cultural divide of the country through the Fergana valley and Tien Shan mountain range.
You have a well earned day of rest the following day, with the chance to see how east and west culture collides in the form of great Soviet architecture and monuments. In the morning, you drive out to visit Ala Archa; a beautiful alpine National Park situated in the Tian Shan mountain range. The day is free to spend hiking or relaxing around the region before returning to Bishkek in the early evening.
On the final day, you take a five hour journey across the border and into the Kazakh city of Almaty. In the afternoon there is the chance for a tour of the city, visiting Green Hill with its panoramic views of the city.
